Sample: Where are the emotional triggers? If you get crazy one notch below murder when someone advocates capital punishment, why? If you get teary-eyed looking at a picnic basket with a tablecloth poking out, why? Take the emotion of your thinking and put legs on it to be sturdy enough to knock around in the writing.

“Part heart-breaking memoir and part soothing comfort for the bereaved ...” Blossoms of the Lower Branches has been described as an unusual blend of story that describes grief over losing a loved one as walking the well-worn footsteps of mythical heroes, fairy tale orphans, and protagonists in literary classics.

Years after my loved younger brother took his own life at the age of twenty-six, I unexpectedly had an epiphany that recovery after a traumatic death of a loved one has a clear and surprising storyline of the literary hero’s journey. My combined memoir and how-to shows that the story of grief resonates with the struggles of classic heroes like Odysseus, Superman, Harry Potter, as well as Shakespeare’s failed Hamlet.

Sample:The deepest loyalties are tested by grief and families, friendships and lives can be torn apart. Stripped of innocence, grievers are not guaranteed to have wisdom, insight or compassion in its place.

An intimate, metaphor-rich guide for directing grief into a hero’s journey. A balm for those seeking a new way to heal from loss. Kirkus Indie Review

I think it is a beautifully written story. The way you drew upon ancient lore reminded me that the quest through grief is not unique to me, and that it brings its own gifts to those who begin, stripped naked, upon its journey. Helen J., who lost her son

... what she learns and shares with the reader will definitely help anyone, including myself on a journey back from sadness, grief and depression to a road with bright lights, joy and understanding in order to move forward.

Rebecca wrote this book beautifully. She has an excellent and unique style of writing that can’t be ignored. The elegance of the words within the pages are unmatched. Not only does the book provide intimate information, but contains factual and well researched information as well. Simply saying this book is excellently written just wouldn’t do the book justice. So what’s her problem?
Maybe she isn’t so grown up.
Maybe she doesn’t really know who she married.
Maybe she doesn’t understand his LDS religion.
Maybe his family is too big and her’s is too small.
Maybe his family has a hidden history.
It could break your heart. It could make her grow up.

When my first book, The Trading of Ken, was published, I was surprised how many people said, “I’ve always wanted to do that.” They were adults who had spent years accumulating life histories, stories and ideas they wanted to share. All they needed was to know how to invite themselves to begin and continue.

As I researched, I realized my writing methods, fears, and joys were not unique. Writers share many techniques, and the book became an accumulation of methods from writers like Hemingway, Julia Child, and Anne Lamott, and as a footnote, me. The big names say it best, but I’m here to add, “It worked for me, too.” It’s a practical book for practical planning.
